The Spider and the Fly
Author::
Mary Howitt (1799-1888)
Website::
http://alt.venus.co.uk/weed/writings/poems/lctlq.htm

Poem:

Mary Howitt (1799-1888) The Spider And The Fly "Will you walk into my parlor?" said the spider to the fly; "'Tis the prettiest little parlor that ever you may spy. The way into my parlor is up a winding stair, And I have many curious things to show when you are there." "Oh no, no," said the little fly; "to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair can ne'er come down again." "I'm sure you must be weary, dear, with soaring up so high. Well you rest upon my little bed?" said the spider to the fly. "There are pretty curtains drawn around; the sheets are fine and thin, And if you like to rest a while, I'll snugly tuck you in!" "Oh no, no," said the little fly, "for I've often heard it said, They never, never wake again who sleep upon your bed!" Said the cunning spider to the fly: "Dear friend, what can I do To prove the warm affection I've always felt for you? I have within my pantry good store of all that's nice; I'm sure you're very welcome - will you please to take a slice?" "Oh no, no," said the little fly; "kind sir, that cannot be: I've heard what's in your pantry, and I do not wish to see!" "Sweet creature!" said the spider, "you're witty and you're wise; How handsome are your gauzy wings; how brilliant are your eyes! I have a little looking-glass upon my parlor shelf; If you'd step in one moment, dear, you shall behold yourself." "I thank you, gentle sir," she said, "for what you're pleased to say, And, bidding you good morning now, I'll call another day." The spider turned him round about, and went into his den, For well he knew the silly fly would soon come back again: So he wove a subtle web in a little corner sly, And set his table ready to dine upon the fly; Then came out to his door again and merrily did sing: "Come hither, hither, pretty fly, with pearl and silver wing; Your robes are green and purple; there's a crest upon your head; Your eyes are like diamond bright, but mine are dull as lead!" Alas, alas! how very soon this silly little fly, Hearing his wily, flattering words, came slowly flitting by; With buzzing wings she hung aloft, then near and nearer grew, Thinking only of her brilliant eyes and green and purple hue, Thinking only of her crested head. Poor, foolish thing! at last Up jumped the cunning spider, and fiercely held her fast; He dragged her up his winding stair, into the dismal den - Within his little parlor - but she ne'er came out again! And now, dear little children, who may this story read, To idle, silly flattering words I pray you ne'er give heed; Unto an evil counselor close heart and ear and eye, And take a lesson from this tale of the spider and the fly.

Theodore the Poet

Poem:

This poem is from Edgar's Spoon River Anthology and speaks of an epitaph that could have been written on Theodore's gravestone. A little out of my realm of understanding, but the words and tone settled me. The language is not middle school-ish, but I liked it and thought it was o.k. to submit a poem we wouldn't exactly use in school. -Theodore the Poet- As a boy, Theodore, you sat for long hours On the shore of the turbid Spoon With deep-set eye staring at the door of the crawfish's burrow, Waiting for him to appear, pushing ahead, First his waving antennae, like straws of hay, And soon his body, colored like soapstone, Gemmed with eyes of jet. And you wondered in a trance of thought What he knew, what he desired, and why he lived at all. But later your vision watched for men and women Hiding in burrows of fate amid great cities, Looking for the souls of them to come out, So that you could see How they lived, and for what, And why they kept crawling so busily Along the sandy way where water fails. As the summer wanes.

Poem:

Swift short breaths passed in fear, for within the darkness something creeps near, scanning the blackness with wide spread eyes, feeling deep down your own silent cries, a hand searches infront clearing a path unseen, as if you were in a terrible, nightmarish dream, of a blackness so black, a hell so hot, a plea to turn back, you wished you had not, gone so deep, where your doom was sure clear, here it was impossible to sleep, enclosed within an incredible fear, deep down in your soul, the screams of a frightened child, where this fear burns a hole, eyes flashing like a beast of the wild, collapsing to the ground you cover your ears, as if not to hear all your trecherouse fears, they float around you with smiles on their face, teasing and mocking you as if it were a race, you scream and plead for them to go away, but they shall not for they prefer to stay. So here rests the mind of the ones who never sleep, the ones who lie alone all day to scream and wheep, the ones who feel an endless pain, the ones who are bloched with a stain, the ones we must therefore retain, for they are the ones we name insane.

The warmth of a starry summer night. Visiting with the clouds on high, Never, ever dreaming of a time to die. The War Child never awakes to tell a story of Peace. War despises dreams

From the beginning, we find Derek forced into an environment he has little experience with. His new boss, Tessa Taylor, has been murdered and her apartment has been ransacked. In opposition to the local police lieutenantís theory of a prowler breaking and entering, Derek immediately suspects foul play of a different sort and is ordered by Tessaís business partner, Kevin Garrett, to find the perpetrator(s). Throughout his investigation, Derek immediately realizes the obstacles he must overcome, including those haunting his personal life. It quickly becomes a volley of fists and gunfire as our detective is pulled deeper into a realm of police corruption and family values, only to learn the real killer has anticipated his every move.

If you can fly? If you can fly? Oh, that is not difficult, Just use your wings, the wings of freedom. Do it...Do it. Hug the sky, and share the sun it's rays. Dip yourself in the clouds, and sing the song; ' A Way from the Darkness '.

Plain enough to see your smile, lost in excitement of a cool summer eve, where silence has a song all it's own.. Drifting across miles of untouched land, drums flow with the breeze, across lonely pines, tall with tales to tell.. No fool can be alone, not in the timberlands of comfort, where only God lives, and love surrounds.. Once upon a time air smelled fresh with understanding, streams ran away with only a thought, now God cries for his children, it's time to bring them home.. Plain enough to see a smile, deep enough to calm the savage beast that rules the inner you.. Listen! you may hear an angel sing in the wilderness of your mind, you'll find, if you hear silence, you have found a peace that has always been inside of you..
